Why Nextdoor?
My family and I lost our home to the 2017 California Tubbs fire. A Nextdoor post alerted us early on, saving us precious time to evacuate.
Problem
Nextdoor helped and connected my community, but many users (myself included), find it to be overwhelming and difficult to navigate.
Solution
By improving alerts, filters, and search, Nextdoor can enhance information access and heighten a sense of belonging in communities.
Easier navigation,
stronger community

Nextdoor Research
I began my process by doing a deep dive into Nextdoor, from mobile application to business model and values.
1. I identified improvement opportunities, and observed inaccuracies in specifications.
2. I discovered Nextdoor values important information, local connections, and safety.
3. I learned Nextdoor makes profits through local advertising and sponsored posts.
Users Research
Users had a lot to say about Nextdoor as seen through these standout quotes.

Competitive Research
I looked into how various applications filter, sort, and prioritize lots of information.

Facebook Search
Provides diverse accessible information after clicking the main search button.

Citizen (Safety App)
Highlights local incidents with color-coded safety level indicators.

Unmasked (Health App)
Filters posts with popular and custom tags as well as timestamps.
Opportunity
Nextdoor creates community by allowing locals to share information, sales, and events, but users feel overwhelmed by unwanted information, leading them to delete the app.
Improving information discovery enhances the overall product experience, increasing user retention and satisfaction.
Improvement #1
I enhanced product consistency and implemented information hierarchy access points.

Before
Specifications are not standardized, there are no sorting methods on the main screen, and no general information hierarchy.

After
Specifications in increments of 5px, logo added for web product cohesion, moderators can pin alerts, and filter button added near current CTA's.
Improvement #2
I broadened the feed filter preferences flow and made them more accessible to users.

Before
Feed preferences are buried 4 clicks away in settings and preferences only allow users to sort between recent and popular posts.

After
Feed preferences accessed via filter button, and allow users to sort their feeds with recent and popular posts as well as with customizable tags.
Improvement #3
I enhanced product consistency and implemented information hierarchy access points.

Before
Clicking on Search only reveals text suggestions and visuals are only accessed through further actions like clicking or typing.

After
Search not only includes suggested search and a see more option, but additional relevant visual information is displayed.
